Round Rock sits right on the transition between the Edwards Plateau and the Blackland Prairie, and you can read that line in the trees. Western neighbourhoods carry the live oak and Ashe juniper mix you see across the Hill Country. East of I-35 the soil turns to deep black clay that grows enormous cedar elms, pecans and hackberries.
That clay is the source of most of the tree problems we are called out for here. It shrinks dramatically in drought and swells again with rain, which stresses root plates and is a large part of why Round Rock trees seem to drop limbs suddenly in the first heavy summer storm after a dry spell.
The city has grown fast, and a great many trees planted in the subdivisions of the 1990s and 2000s are now reaching the size where the structural decisions made in their first ten years start to matter. Co-dominant stems on Bradford pears and Arizona ash are a weekly call for us in Round Rock.

- East Round Rock sits on Blackland Prairie clay that moves substantially between wet and dry. It stresses root systems and is the main reason limbs fail in the first storm after a drought.
- Ageing subdivision plantings
- Fast-growing species planted in 1990s and 2000s developments, particularly Arizona ash and Bradford pear, are now at the age where weak unions start failing. Cabling often saves them.
- Williamson County permitting
- Round Rock does not apply Austin protected-tree rules, so removal is generally simpler. Subdivision and HOA covenants frequently do impose their own restrictions, so check those first.
- Brushy Creek corridor
- Properties backing onto the greenbelt carry mature bottomland hardwoods with quite different needs to the front-yard live oaks, including much heavier deadwood loads.

Commercial sites, new development and land inside certain overlay districts do have requirements, and many Round Rock HOAs impose their own covenants. We check both before quoting.
Largely because of the clay. Blackland Prairie soil shrinks hard in drought, which damages fine roots and stresses the tree, then swells again when rain arrives. Combine that stress with the sudden loading of a summer thunderstorm on a heavy cedar elm crown and limbs fail. Thinning the crown before storm season measurably reduces the risk.
