A stump left in the ground is not a neutral decision. It sprouts suckers that keep coming back for years, it is a reliable food source for termites and carpenter ants working their way toward your house, and it will destroy a mower deck the first time somebody forgets it is there.
Grinding depth is where careless stump work goes wrong. Grinding two inches down makes the stump invisible until the first rain settles the soil and it reappears. We grind 6 to 10 inches below grade, deeper where you plan to replant, and we chase the major surface roots outward rather than leaving them to surface across the lawn.
Every job starts with a utility locate. Irrigation lines, low-voltage lighting, gas and fibre all tend to run exactly where a tree used to be, and a grinding wheel does not distinguish between a root and a conduit.

- A 811 locate request placed before scheduling, plus an on-site sweep for irrigation and landscape lighting that public locates do not cover.

- Standard depth of 6 to 10 inches below existing grade, taken deeper where you intend to plant a replacement tree or lay a slab.
- Surface root removal
- Major roots radiating from the stump ground out to where they drop below mowing depth.
- Grindings hauled away
- Grindings removed from site rather than mounded over the hole, which is what causes the sunken patch a year later.
- Backfill and level
- Hole backfilled with clean topsoil, tamped and raked level so you can seed, sod or plant immediately.
- Access protection
- Plywood tracks laid where the grinder crosses turf or hardscape, and gates and fence panels re-hung if they had to come off.

Locate and clear
Utilities located and marked, loose rock and debris cleared from around the stump so the wheel never picks up a projectile.

The wheel works across the stump in passes, taking it steadily down past grade rather than in one aggressive cut.

Chase the roots
Major surface roots followed outward and ground down below mowing depth so nothing resurfaces.

Grindings loaded out, topsoil brought in, area levelled and every hard surface blown clean.

What shapes the work
Nobody can scope this accurately over the phone, and any company that tries is guessing. These are the five things an arborist is actually assessing when they walk your property.
- Diameter
- The work is driven by the widest point of the stump measured at ground level, not by the height of the tree that stood there.
- Root flare spread
- Live oaks and pecans develop enormous buttress roots. The visible stump can be a third of the material that actually has to be ground.
- Access width
- Our standard grinder needs a 36 inch gate. Narrower access means a smaller machine and more hours.
- Soil and rock
- Central Texas limestone sits close to the surface in much of the Hill Country and wears cutting teeth quickly, which slows the work west of Mopac.
- Grindings disposal
- Leaving the grindings on site as mulch is the quickest finish. Hauling them off and backfilling with topsoil takes longer but leaves an immediately usable surface.

Six to ten inches below existing grade as standard, which is enough for turf, garden beds and general landscaping. If you are planting a replacement tree in the same spot or pouring a slab, we grind deeper and remove more root material, which we will set out in the written scope.
Grinding uses a cutting wheel to reduce the stump and major roots to chips in place, leaving the deep root system to decay naturally underground. Full removal excavates the entire root plate with machinery. Grinding is far faster and much less destructive to the surrounding lawn, and it is the right choice for the overwhelming majority of residential jobs.
Yes, with preparation. Grindings are high in carbon and will pull nitrogen out of the soil as they break down, so we remove them and backfill with clean topsoil. Where possible we recommend planting a few feet to one side of the original stump, which avoids the remaining deep root mass entirely.
Most residential stumps take 30 to 90 minutes including setup and cleanup. A very large live oak stump with a wide buttress root flare can take half a day. We can usually grind on the same visit as a removal, which saves bringing the machine out separately.
The machine is heavy and it does track across whatever it crosses, so we lay plywood over turf and hardscape on the approach. Some marking of soft ground is normal in wet conditions. We rake and repair the access path as part of the job.
